What to pack in your diaper bag at every stage

By LittleJoy & Co.

Packing a diaper bag gets easier once you know what you actually use. Here is a simple checklist for every stage, from the first outings with a newborn to family trips, so you leave the house ready and never overpacked.

Newborn

In the first months, outings are short but unpredictable. Keep the basics within reach and restock as soon as you get home.

  • Diapers (one for every two hours out, plus two extra)
  • Wipes and a small tube of diaper cream
  • The changing pad
  • Two bottles or your feeding essentials
  • A burp cloth and a light blanket
  • An extra change of clothes for baby (and a spare top for you)
  • A pacifier with a clip

Tip: insulated bottle pockets keep milk or formula at the right temperature for longer, so feeding on the go is one less thing to think about.

Toddler years

As your little one grows, the diapers get fewer and the snacks get more. Think in terms of comfort and distraction.

  • Diapers or training pants, wipes and a small bag for dirty clothes
  • Snacks and pouches in a reusable container
  • A water bottle or sippy cup in the side pocket
  • A small toy or book
  • Sunscreen, a hat and a light jacket
  • Hand sanitizer and a few bandages

Tip: clip your bag to the stroller with stroller straps and your hands stay free for the playground.

Work

Going back to work does not mean carrying two bags. A well-organized diaper bag can hold your workday too.

  • A laptop or tablet up to 13 inches
  • Pumping supplies and a cooler pack, if you need them
  • Your wallet, keys and phone in a zippered pocket
  • Chargers, a notebook and a pen
  • A snack and a water bottle for you

Travel

For trips, the diaper bag becomes the family carry-on. Pack for delays, not just for the plan.

  • Double the diapers and wipes you would bring for a day
  • Two changes of clothes for baby and one for you
  • Snacks, bottles and a sealed pouch for travel days
  • Medications, documents and boarding passes in one zippered pocket
  • A lovey or blanket that smells like home
  • Headphones, a tablet and a small surprise toy

How to keep it organized

Give every item a home and keep it there: bottles in the insulated pockets, the changing pad flat against the back, small items in interior pockets and your own essentials in the back zippered pocket. Restock the same day you come home and your bag is always ready for the next outing.

The JoyPack was designed for exactly this: 11 interior pockets, insulated bottle pockets, a water-resistant lining and room for a 13-inch laptop, with a changing pad and stroller straps included.
